May Day is an old, history filled tradition across Europe, and in fact the world. It in part originates from the protests and demands to bring in the 8-hour day (40-hour week). Before the 8-hour week became law, such as the 1800s, many labourers would work in excess of 16hours a day, 6 times a week – that’s a whopping 96hours a week. So during a congress back in 1904, trade unions across many counties agreed to stop labour work on 1st May where possible. Today ‘May Day’ is more commonly known as ‘International Workers Day’.
